Development of a mix-use scheme in a UNESCO world heritage site- The use of natural materials, integration of exterior and interior spaces and key views informed the design of the building.
Where: Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, South America.
Description: office and cultural building, commissioned after a design competition. The building consists of offices, meeting rooms, restaurant and facilities for staff.
Notes: The development is located in the grounds of historic sensitivity in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which involved several layers of complexity during the planning application stage. The structural strategy responded to the historic constraints on the ground.
We applied an array of Design Techniques, for instance, we considered the textures of the materials that would encourage biodiversity to thrive. We encourage insects and flora to thrive on them enhancing the local ecosystems.
Concept: The architectural language responds to the traditional modernist architecture in Uruguay with the use of natural materials.
Interior: The exterior spaces at the ground floor have been carefully considered and the creation of a public space would activate an area which would represent a positive contribution to the local community.
