A larger Hertford Avenue


The brief of the client was to make a larger family home from the existing house within particular a really large open family/ diner/living with a separate living room and two additional double rooms with en-suites. We had to consider a growing family with the changing needs of the children getting older with other needs such as accommodating a nanny and hosting friends and family. The constraints of the site meant that we had to incorporate natural light cleverly from different aspects to gain extra luminosity in the rear extension.

Our solution

The aim of this rear modern extension was to expand the clients existing 4 bedroom house into a five -bed house, creating a large open-plan kitchen and living space while also upgrading the facade of the existing house. The design achieves an uncompromisingly modern aesthetic, stripped back with a continuous finish from inside to outside. The expansive glazing draws light deep into the property and the extended areas create a protected terrace which becomes fully integrated into the internal layout when all patio doors are open. The highly glazed openable sliding doors and frameless rooflight ensure that the open-plan space seamlessly flows from inside to outside, thus creating a perceptibly more generous space.

The brief was to create a larger family home. With two growing boys and a love of music, films and cooking our clients vision was to create several ‘teen-proof’ and ‘adult’ zones, including sound insulation and separate shower rooms, separate ‘tech’ space for music, gaming and films. For the adults, a comfortable kitchen with an island complete with an indoor barbecue and a steam oven and coffee machine. They wanted a ‘cocktail’ area that felt part of the garden. An office and a utility room. And above all, they needed sound insulation to complete the zoning areas.

Hertford Avenue is an Edwardian house which we completely reshaped and remodelled bringing the area square metre from 139 m2 to 250 m2 through clever design and planning applications. Above all, the 50 m2 living/kitchen/dining is integrated into the garden through floor to ceiling doors, meaning that the indoor and outdoor spaces combine.

The loft we managed to not only carve out two double rooms, we also had just enough space for an ensuite in each.

Contemporary wooden flooring and different hues of greys and off-white make space have calmness and depth.
