High End Modernisation of a Modernist house
“The challenge was to modernise a modernist house designed by renowned architect Royston Summers in the late 1960’s”.

Where: Esher, Elmsbridge, Surrey, UK
Description: L+ Architects were appointed to modernise this Brutalist house built in the early 1970s. The client’s brief was a complete refurbishment, restoration of the fabric of the building and conservation of certain elements within the house as well as the interior architecture, interior design and lighting design. The house is in a Conservation area.
Notes: Our approach was informed by conservation; respecting the external fabric of the building, restoring the internal spaces, reinstating elements and features that have been lost through the years. The fabric of the house was brought up to modern standards– for fire, acoustics, waterproofing and thermal insulation – while respecting the building’s external appearance.
Concept: Like many Brutalist buildings and houses, Lakeside Drive has fallen into disrepair. Nevertheless, there is now growing demand and appreciation for Brutalist buildings to be updated to meet today’s living standards. The house had a range of different issues including unsympathetic change, loss of historic features, changes in the exterior landscaping and gardens mainly in its relationship with the lake, and most notably perhaps, the negative impacts of previous conservation interventions.
Interior: We designed the Interior Architecture, Interior Design including the interior Design with a contemporary approach.
